Investment will help bring general aviation 160-200hp engines to market
Racine, Wis., May 26, 2015—DeltaHawk Engines, Inc. ®, a privately held developer of multi-fuel general aviation engines based in Racine, Wisconsin, announces investment from the Ruud family as lead funders, giving them controlling interest in the company. This funding round allows for the commercialization of DeltaHawk’s first engine family and completion of research and development (R&D) for higher horsepower engines used primarily in general aviation airplanes.

In response to the Clean Air Act enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mandate requiring the general aviation industry transition away from leaded aviation gasoline (AvGas), DeltaHawk plans to test and certify their multi-fuel (Diesel or Jet-A) 160-200 horsepower engine family for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards.
The new engine is smaller and approximately 35 percent more efficient than AvGas burning engines and can fly further on less fuel and at lower costs. Also, the pioneering design can maintain 100 percent power up to 18,000 feet.
DeltaHawk’s innovative engineering and foresight has been led by Doug Doers, a co-founder in the company. Doers will continue to implement this vision with the company as Chief Technology Officer.
Once certified, manufacturing and sales of the engines will begin. Production facilities will be in the current Racine, Wisconsin factory, which was also purchased by the Ruuds.

DeltaHawk Engines was founded in 1996 by Doug and Diane Doers and JP and Jeanne Brooks with a vision to develop and market disruptive engine technology to the general aviation industry. DeltaHawk developed the first “clean sheet” compression-ignition engine; radically redesigning the general aviation airplane engine and revolutionizing the industry. By 1997, DeltaHawk developed a prototype engine running on a static Velocity airframe. In 2015, DeltaHawk plans to test and certify the multi-fuel 160-200 horsepower engines to FAA standards. Once certified, these engines will be among the smallest, lightest, most fuel-efficient and reliable multi-fuel engines on the market.
AvGas is the only gasoline in the US currently allowed to contain tetraethyl lead (TEL), resulting in the inability to transport and distribute the fuel to airports as easily as automobile gasoline is distributed to gas stations. The EPA has slated to cease TEL additives in AvGas by January of 2017.
